PROJECT: The Keep

TYPE: Residential

LOCATION: Wiltshire

SERVICE: RIBA work stages 0-7

STATUS: Completed 2013

Le Marchant Barracks was the headquarters of the Wiltshire Regiment from 1878 to 1957, and The Keep is the last of the retained buildings on the site to be converted into residential accommodation. The Grade II Listed building was the guard house to the barracks.

Working closely with the Head of Conservation for Wiltshire, a scheme was developed that maximised values for our client whilst still being respectful to the existing fabric of this landmark building.

The accommodation comprises of 13 one and two bed apartments, and includes extensions on the ground floor and a spectacular penthouse apartment on the roof. Due to the relatively fragile condition of the existing floors and roof, the penthouse is constructed in a steel vierendeel truss which spans diagonally across the building transferring the entire weight of the penthouse onto the brick external walls. The apartments exhibit much of the character of the existing building including bare brickwork walls, coffered concrete ceilings, and the cast and wrought iron structure has been carefully renovated and left exposed.
