PROJECT: Whitehouse

TYPE: Residential

LOCATION: Wiltshire

SERVICE: RIBA work stages 0-3

STATUS: Planning

The constraints of this challenging site were used to develop a dramatic extension to this former cricket pavilion in Coulston, Wiltshire.

The project brief was to extend an existing annex and make it more accessible for the clients’ elderly parents. This involved some internal alterations and extending into the bank to the rear of the building. There was a risk of one of the occupants becoming bedridden, so a sunken terrace was provided off the bedroom with views out onto woodland. Raised beds were provided to allow the occupants to continue their love of gardening.

The fenestration is designed to maximise natural daylight levels along with views. The high-level windows direct the eye up the wooded hill which in the spring is covered in bluebells.

The walls are clad in corten steel which develops a protective layer of oxidisation and looks stunning against the ever changing environment of the buildings woodland setting.
