This Carbon Neutral and Code for Sustainable Homes Level 5 development comprises a single storey dwelling house (villa), separate annex and garage/workshop building and stable block. The former garden nursery site has extensive planning history for residential development falling in line with the requirements of NPPF Paragraph 55 ‘House in the Countryside’ which sets out exceptional circumstances to enable the erection of new isolated dwellings in the open countryside.
A formal garden divides the villa and annex with a wildlife and conservation garden, kitchen garden, orchard and paddock serve the remaining site.
Combining elements of a Roman Villa with the stark simplicity of the international or Modernist style the ‘H’ plan of the dwelling house creates a series of spaces, rooms and courts. There is an interplay between the inside and outside with large expanses of glazing and sliding internal walls, with the Roman influences of symmetrical planning proving practical for modern family living.
